What are the colours of the Australian Aboriginal flag?
Built for the people taking this test
Whatever brought you to Australia, the path to citizenship runs through the same 20-question test. Here's how we help.
Skilled migrants and visa holders preparing for their test date
You've worked years for this moment. Your appointment letter is on the fridge and the date is creeping closer. You don't need a beginner's overview — you need fast, exam-shaped practice that tells you exactly what you don't know yet, before it costs you the day.
How to pass the test on your first try →New Zealanders applying after the 2023 pathway change
Since 1 July 2023, eligible New Zealanders living in Australia for at least four years can apply directly for citizenship — without first becoming permanent residents. Same test, same study book, same pass mark. We help you prepare for the bit Kiwis often skim: Australian government, history, and values.
Citizenship test for New Zealanders →Partners and family members of Australian citizens
Maybe you're studying alongside a spouse, helping a parent practise, or preparing as a family. The test is the same for everyone, but the appointment can feel intimidating if it's your first interaction with Home Affairs. We walk you through what to expect so you arrive calm.
What to expect at your appointment →How the citizenship test works
Step 1 — The basics
The Australian citizenship test has 20 multiple-choice questions and you have 45 minutes to finish — most people are done in under 20. The pass mark is 75%, so you need 15 of the 20 right. Five of those questions cover Australian values, and you must get every single one of those correct. Miss even one values question and you fail the whole test, no matter how well you did elsewhere.
Step 2 — What it covers
Every question is drawn from the official study book, Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond. You'll be tested on the country's history, system of government, democratic values, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens. The book is dense in places — but the test only pulls from a defined set of facts and concepts. Knowing what to focus on saves hours of unfocused reading.

Our mock tests mirror the real exam: 20 questions, 75% pass mark, 45-minute clock, the same five-out-of-five values rule. After every test you see your score, the questions you got wrong, and a plain-English explanation for each. Practice in short bursts during the week, sit a full mock the night before, and walk into your appointment knowing the format inside out.

Over the past two years, more than 10,000 people have used CitizenshipTest.au to prepare. Most pass on their first attempt. Whether you study on the train, at lunch, or the night before, our Australian citizenship test preparation tools fit the time you have.
Your study toolkit
Three resources, used together, are what most people pass with. Each one does something the others don't — and on its own, none of them is quite enough.
Read first
The study book
Read it cover-to-cover at least once. Every question on the test is drawn from this book — it's the foundation everything else builds on. Free to read online here, so you don't need to buy a copy. Skim chapters you know, slow down on the values section.

The official info site
Where you book your appointment, check your eligibility, and confirm fees and ID documents. Always the source of truth for any official update — pricing, paperwork, processing times. Use it for the logistics around your test, not the studying itself.
Practice + mocks
CitizenshipTest.au
20-question mocks in real exam format — same pass mark, same time limit, same five-out-of-five values rule. Instant scoring with explanations for every question. Track weak topics over time so the night before isn't a cold sweat.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many questions are on the Australian citizenship test?
The test has 20 questions. You need to answer at least 15 correctly (75%) to pass. All 5 questions about Australian values must be answered correctly — there's no partial pass on that section.
How long do I have to complete the test?
You have 45 minutes. Most people finish well within that time. Our practice tests help you build speed and confidence so you're not rushing on the day.
What happens if I fail the citizenship test?
You can resit the test. There's no limit on how many times you can try, but you'll need to book a new appointment. Most people who prepare properly pass first time.
Is the citizenship test available in other languages?
The test is conducted in English. An interpreter can assist with the interview portion of your citizenship appointment, but not with the test itself.
Can I practise the citizenship test for free?
Yes. CitizenshipTest.au gives you a full mock exam and 20 practice questions free — no account required. Start right now and see how ready you are.
How is CitizenshipTest.au different from the government site?
The government site tells you about the test. We help you pass it. Our mock tests replicate the real exam format, track your results, and show you exactly where you need more practice.
Is the citizenship test getting harder in 2026?
No. The format and pass mark haven't changed: 20 questions, 75% to pass, all 5 values questions correct, 45 minutes. The question pool is refreshed periodically to reflect the current edition of Our Common Bond, but the structure and difficulty are the same as previous years.
How many times can I retake the citizenship test?
There is no formal limit on retakes. If you fail, you can rebook and sit the test again. You'll need to pay any associated booking fees and wait for an available appointment, which can take weeks. Most people who prepare with practice tests pass on the first attempt.
Do I need to study the whole book or just certain sections?
Test questions are drawn from across Our Common Bond, so don't skip whole chapters. That said, the testable section (Part 1) is what counts — Parts 2 and 3 are background reading. Use mock tests to find your weak chapters quickly, then re-read those sections in depth rather than starting from page one.
How long should I study before booking my appointment?
Most people are ready in two to four weeks of consistent practice — around 20 to 30 minutes a day. Sit a mock test early to see where you stand. If you score above 80% on a fresh mock without preparation, you may be ready in days. If you're below 60%, give yourself a month and use category practice to fill the gaps.
You've worked hard to get here. Let's make sure you pass.
