Read the bookHow the Australian citizenship test works
The Australian citizenship test is a multiple-choice exam with 20 questions. To pass, you need to answer at least 15 correctly — that's a 75% pass mark. Each question has several options, and only one is correct. The test is taken at a Department of Home Affairs office as part of your citizenship appointment, and it's delivered on a computer. You'll see your score on screen as soon as you submit, so there's no waiting to find out whether you've passed.
There is one rule that catches many people out: all 5 questions about Australian values must be answered correctly. It doesn't matter how well you do in the other sections — if you miss even one values question, you won't pass, regardless of your overall score. That means you could score 19 out of 20 and still fail if one of those wrong answers was in the values section. Prioritise Part 4 of the study book when you prepare.
All questions come from the official study book, Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond. The book is organised into four topic areas, and every question on the test is drawn from one of them: Australia and its people, Australia's democratic beliefs, rights and liberties, Government and the law in Australia, and Australian values. You can read the full book free on this site — it's the same resource the government uses to write the exam, so it's the best place to start.
If you don't pass, don't panic — you can retake the test as many times as you need. There is no cap on attempts and no penalty for failing. The only thing you'll need to do is book a new appointment with the Department of Home Affairs, which may take a few weeks. Most people who fail on their first attempt come back prepared and pass comfortably the second time, so use any failed attempt as a guide to which topics need more revision.
